How to apply a deodorant balm
Published 20 October 2026
Step by step
- Start with clean, dry underarms. Balm works best on skin that's been washed and fully dried. Applying over yesterday's sweat makes any deodorant less effective.
- Scoop a pea-sized amount. Use a clean, dry fingertip. Water in the jar shortens a natural product's life.
- Warm it for a few seconds. Rub it between two fingertips until it turns smooth and glossy.
- Smooth it on. Massage it over the whole underarm until you can't see it. That usually takes 10–15 seconds.
- Repeat on the other side with a fresh scoop.
- Wait a minute before dressing. This lets the balm settle and avoids marks.
- Wash your hands.
How to avoid marks on clothes
- Use less. A pea-sized amount covers one underarm.
- Rub it in until it's invisible.
- Give it a minute before putting a top on.
- Dark balms (with charcoal) can leave a faint grey mark if overapplied; this washes out in a normal wash.
If the balm is too soft or too firm
Deodorant balms are made from plant oils and butters that change texture with temperature.
- Too soft or runny: the room is warm. Put the jar in the fridge for 15–20 minutes, then store it somewhere cooler.
- Too firm: the room is cold. Hold the jar in your hands for a minute, or scrape a little with your fingernail and warm it between your fingers.
- Grainy: it has melted and reset slowly. It still works; see balm too soft, melted or grainy?
Tips for the first few weeks
If you're moving from an antiperspirant, you'll sweat normally again and your body may smell different for a while. Apply in the morning, carry the jar if you need to reapply, and give it two to three weeks before deciding. Our switching guide explains what to expect.
Who should patch test first
Lowena contains bicarbonate of soda and essential oils. If you have sensitive skin, eczema or have reacted to natural deodorants before, put a small amount on the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours before using it on your underarms.
Frequently asked questions
About a pea-sized amount per underarm. More doesn't work better; it just takes longer to rub in and is more likely to mark clothes.
Fingertips are easiest because they warm the balm. If you prefer, use a small cosmetic spatula. Wash your hands afterwards.
It's best to wait. Freshly shaved skin is more sensitive, and the bicarbonate of soda and essential oils in many balms can sting. Shave at night and apply in the morning if you can.
Most people apply once in the morning. If you exercise or have a long day, you can reapply to clean, dry skin.
