Schmidt's Charcoal + Magnesium
A well-known stick with a large number of Amazon reviews (about 4.4 stars from around 3,000 ratings in October 2026). It's the closest formula to Lowena in ingredients, but in a plastic stick. Suits: people who want a familiar stick and a widely stocked brand.
Dr. Squatch charcoal deodorant
A stick aimed mainly at men, with strong fragrances. It's the cheapest per 100g on this list, but in plastic packaging. Suits: people who prefer a stick and bold scents.
Greendoor charcoal deodorant cream
A charcoal cream in a jar at a similar price to Lowena, in a slightly smaller size. Suits: people who want a jar format at a low price.
Elsa's charcoal deodorant cream
A newer charcoal cream with relatively few reviews in October 2026, and the highest price per 100g here. Suits: people who want to try a smaller brand.
Lowena Charcoal & Magnesium Deodorant Balm
Our balm combines coconut charcoal powder with magnesium chloride and bicarbonate of soda, in organic coconut oil and shea butter, scented with essential oils. It's handmade in small batches in the UK and comes in a 60ml glass jar that lasts 6–8 weeks. Suits: people who want a plastic-free jar and a low cost per week. Watch for: it contains bicarbonate of soda, so it isn't the best choice if bicarb has irritated you before.
How to choose
- Format first. Stick for speed; balm or cream for less packaging and more control.
- Check for bicarbonate of soda if you have sensitive skin.
- Compare price per 100g, or better, cost per week.
- Read recent reviews about texture and staining, not just the star rating.

Frequently asked questions
Look for one without bicarbonate of soda, or with very little. Charcoal itself is rarely the irritant. Lowena contains bicarb, so patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
Balms and creams in glass jars or tins. Sticks in plastic tubes have the most.
