What made Procoal popular
Procoal launched its activated charcoal natural deodorant balm in 2019, made in the UK in plastic-free packaging, and it built a strong following on Amazon. If you liked it, you probably liked some combination of: a balm you apply with your fingers, charcoal, no aluminium, and no plastic.
What to look for in a replacement
| What you liked | Look for |
|---|---|
| Charcoal balm format | A balm or cream in a jar, not a stick |
| Plastic-free | Glass jar or metal tin |
| Strong odour control | Bicarbonate of soda and/or magnesium on the ingredient list |
| Gentle on skin | Lower bicarb, or bicarb-free with magnesium |
| Made in the UK | Check the listing or label |
Options to consider
- Lowena Charcoal & Magnesium Deodorant Balm: 60ml glass jar, £9.99, coconut charcoal with magnesium chloride and bicarbonate of soda, handmade in the UK.
- Charcoal creams in jars from smaller UK brands; see our comparison of charcoal deodorants.
- Non-charcoal balms such as magnesium balms, if charcoal wasn't what mattered most to you.
Switching between balms
Moving from one natural balm to another is usually easy, because you're not coming off an antiperspirant. Use a pea-sized amount, rub it in fully, and give it a week to judge the scent and strength. If you have sensitive skin, patch test first: Lowena contains bicarbonate of soda and essential oils.
Frequently asked questions
No. Lowena is an independent UK brand with no connection to Procoal. Both are charcoal deodorant balms in jars, but the formulas are different.
We haven't been able to find it on sale in the UK recently. Check Procoal's own website or social channels for the latest.
Probably not exactly. Textures, scents and strength vary. Expect a short adjustment, and patch test if your skin is sensitive.
